The Joy of a Picture Book

When I was homeschooling, the public library felt like a safe haven for me. It was truly a space where I could take a breath between the hustle and bustle of the day. Aside from being surrounded by some of my favorite things, books, the library provided a space where my kids could be creative, explore, and ask questions without me needing to feel as though I needed to facilitate opportunities for learning. Those three things were some of my favorite aspects of homeschooling! More on that in the next post!

There was a calm and peace I had being surrounded by books, especially picture books. I believe children (and adults!) of all ages can enjoy a beautiful picture book. I don’t think kids ever outgrow them. In our family, reading a picture book provided an opportunity for the whole family to gather and enjoy a lesson that stretched many different levels and grades. There was such a richness that could be extracted from the pages of these books. Beautifully illustrated picture books drew everyone in. I will always reflect on the times I sat on the couch with all four of my kids and read a beautiful picture book.

Life gets busy when you are a homeschool parent. You are juggling all the things. Sometimes finding time do actual “homeschooling” can be a challenge. I would encourage you to take some big deep breaths, grab a beautiful picture book. gather outside on a picnic blanket, on the sofa, even in your comfy bed, and take in the abundance of a picture book. Sometimes it is the perfect reset you need.
